My Second Day at the Capital

Emma and Aysha with Senator Linda Lopez

Hello I’m Emma R. I am currently a senior at Portales High School. This is my third year with Evolvement and my second year on the leadership team. One of Evolvements campaigns is 24/7 which is dedicated to making schools 100% tobacco free twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Being on the leadership team gives me the opportunity to go to Day At the Capital and speak to legislators about 24/7 and why I support tobacco free schools.

Being given the opportunity to meet with our legislators allows me to help spread awareness and contribute to my own community. While not all legislators are in support of Evolvement and one 24/7, we still have a lot of support from most. It can be hard going into the meetings and sometimes you’re nervous, but as you go on you gain confidence not only from doing it a lot but also from a lot of the positivity you receive from the legislators.

Attending Day At the Capital is important because it helps to continue gaining support from our own local government and educating them about our work. It also gives you confidence to continue to gain support for your cause. A couple years ago I was terrified to speak in front of people or do presentations, and now I can speak in front of others. Sometimes I still get nervous but in the end 24/7 has helped me speak up and have confidence in my voice. By continuing to go to Day at the Capitol and talking to our legislators we are able to help our own communities also gain awareness.  My own school is in huge support of 24/7 because it helps to protect the health of students and stop them from gaining bad habits
