The Importance of Being a Tobacco-Free School District

Hello, My name is Abigail S. and I am a freshman at Escalante Middle/High school. This is my first year in Evolvement and hopefully I’ll make it onto the leadership team. This blog is about the importance of being a tobacco-free school/district.

It is necessary that schools go tobacco-free for the sake of the students and their success in education. Both Evolvement and the 24/7 campaign have been working hard to keep schools both tobacco-free and nicotine-free. As a student I feel like other students should not be using tobacco products especially in and on school or district grounds as it is a problem to their learning, and health. A reason why I care about tobacco use is because it can cause cancer and other serious conditions which can lead to possible death.

A tobacco-free policy at schools impacts its community by reducing youth nicotine addiction, decreases exposure to secondhand smoke, and shifts social norms. Tobacco-free policies influence students by reducing smoke rates, lowering tobacco use, decreasing the exposure to secondhand smoke, and increasing awareness. A tobacco-free policy in a school district establishes a 100% smoke- and nicotine-free environment, protecting students and staff from secondhand smoke and aerosol exposure. These policies promote healthy norms, reduce youth vaping and smoking initiation, offer positive role modeling, and ensure compliance with health regulations.
