Experiencing 24/7

My name is Johnesse! I have been an active Evolvement member for three years and I’ve been on the leadership team for one. I attend Gadsden High School and we have 24/7 at our school! 24/7 is a campaign that is a part of Evolvement where we work to make sure all New Mexico schools follow the Department of Health’s guidelines for a 100% tobacco-free policy.

It is important for schools to have a 100% tobacco free policy, that way everyone understands that nicotine is prohibited 24 hours a day 7 days a week on school campuses. I have been able to go around school seeking support through pledge cards from teachers, students, staff members, along with friends, and I was able to go around my school putting up flyers to inform and remind our school that we are 100% tobacco-free. Recently, I was also given the opportunity to attend a board meeting and speak with my best friend about what this campaign does. It was a 5 minute presentation where we got to publicly speak and give our thanks to the board. What I liked about the board meeting was that we weren’t alone!. We had one of our advisors, Sam, attend the board meeting and give us support.

Having 24/7 could be impactful at your school, especially for those of you who have been exposed to nicotine products at such an early age. We are not here to judge or make students feel bad, we focus on educating and advocating for what is right. With this campaign we’ve been able to limit student smoking at our school especially in the restrooms. Our staff has taken effect and I’ve seen a change which reminds me that I am doing the right thing. My next goal for the campaign is to complete a principal meeting. I do this to advocate for a better and healthier New Mexico. I hope to keep student students and staff safe from tobacco addiction.
