Greetings, fellow New Mexicans! I’m Kris, a senior at Gadsden High School, and I am a 3rd-year Evolvement member. Through Evolvement, I am able to work with the 24/7 campaign, which helps school districts adopt, implement, and enforce comprehensive tobacco-free policies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. One of the first steps in accomplishing our goal is education and networking, which is why we often host events on campus, such as the one I am going to tell you all about!
This past Take Down Tobacco Day, myself and other Evolvers on my campus set up an interactive 24/7 booth in our cafeteria during lunch with the goal of educating and engaging with our peers. Several curious students and staff members stepped up to the booth, wondering why we had set up a mini pool of rubber ducks and ring toss! After explaining who and what we were representing, we asked them to take a quick 5-minute survey about their knowledge of tobacco use amongst youth and how the feel about their previous knowledge. It was eye-opening to me to realize just how little knowledge many people had, especially staff. Everyone was aware that tobacco is harmful, but they hadn’t deeply considered how dramatically tobacco spoils our campus. When they completed their survey, they got to play ring toss or any of the other games we had set up, and have some laughs with us! Everyone walked away with smiles on their faces and some even walked away with Evolvement or 24/7 swag.
Many of my peers walked away with something even greater than swag: knowledge! They hadn’t realized how greatly tobacco harms our very own campus. With tobacco on our campuses, the safe and healthy learning environment of our schools is disrupted. Not only does this impact current students, but the future souls to roam the same halls as well. Nobody wants their little nieces, nephews, cousins, siblings, and even kids of their own to be steered down a dark and dangerous path. We all want our youth to be healthy, happy, and safe at school, but that can’t be possible without comprehensive tobacco-free policies in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
