My Role in Getting CISD to go 100% Tobacco-Free

Hello, I am Adrianna C. I am a junior at Cuba High School. I have been in Evolvement since my freshman year. I was chosen to be on the ENM Leadership team twice, and for that I am grateful. As an Evolvement leader, I have changed policies and worked to make my school a safer place to learn.

This previous year I worked hard to create positive changes in my school district. I attended multiple school board meetings in order to help educate as well as change the district policies on tobacco. I was nervous to present the policy change to the board at the first meeting. What inspired me and helped me shake my jitters was the fact that I was working to make my school better. I presented all the requirements to be a comprehensive district and they thanked me for coming. It was a strange experience because they weren’t as reactive as I had anticipated. At the next meeting, discussing the policy change was on the agenda. I went and they had me further explain the requirements of a fully comprehensive district. Then, after some quick review, they decided to vote to make Cuba a fully comprehensive district. The feeling of accomplishment was so rewarding and amazing; and I hope we can continue to change every district in New Mexico to be fully comprehensive.

This policy change helped ensure that Cuba would be considered a fully comprehensive school district. I learned that, although it was a process, most board members have the betterment of the school at heart, and that is exactly what Evolvement helps with. By continuing to network with our schools and our communities, we can slowly create a tobacco-free youth movement across New Mexico.
