How Parents and Schools can Educate Students on Vaping Dangers During Stay-At-Home Orders

A new schoolyear is coming up, and every school district has a different strategy for going back to school. Even though these are uncertain times, tobacco should never be something to turn to for relief, and 24/7 wants to equip YOU to do your part in helping your students avoid addiction.

We know that 1 in 3 New Mexican teenagers were using tobacco in 2019, but in 2020 there are innumerable new stressors and anxiety-inducing events that may cause an increase in tobacco product usage, such as vaping. So, what can parents and schools do to help their students avoid or overcome tobacco addiction while they are stuck at home? Check out the lists below for comprehensive tips and tricks to keep our kids safe.

What parents can do:

  • Educate yourselves on tobacco addiction through sites like the CDC and WHO by learning:
    • The different types of vaping and tobacco products
    • The signs of addiction
    • The many negative side effects on young people
  • Observe your children’s habits in the morning, afternoon and evening (if possible)
  • Start an open, calm dialogue with your child about tobacco and/or their possible addiction
  • Use 24/7’s cessation resources and “homework” assignments
  • Keep your children active and socially engaged
    • Take time to have daily conversations and hear how they’re doing
    • Encourage regular exercise and fun, safe activities that the whole family can be involved in
    • Offer to schedule some virtual face time with your children’s friends to help them feel socially connected
  • Reach out to your family doctor or counselor for additional assistance

What schools can do:

  • Share your cessation resources with parents
  • Prep your campus for when students come back
    • Update your policy to be 100% tobacco-free
    • Send emails to students, staff and parents about the policy before returning to campus
    • Set up progressive and supportive forms of discipline for students who may violate the policy
  • Offer virtual counseling for students with school counselors/advisors
