The Power of Policy as a Plan of Action

My name is Cali, and I am a sophomore at Portales High School. This is my second year in Evolvement, and my first on the Leadership Team. When it comes to the role of policy, I believe that it can build plans of action for how we deal with issues. In order to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for myself and my peers, we must be able to stand on firm policy foundations. Substantial and concise policies can break down the wall of negligence between those in power and the members of the community.

One of the campaigns Evolvement works with is called 24/7. The 24/7 Campaign exists to help update school tobacco policies throughout New Mexico. We stand for schools to be tobacco-free 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If schools adopt a truly comprehensive tobacco-free policy, the normalcy and complacency of tobacco use in schools can be erased.

I believe schools should be places where students can learn not only inside the classroom but also outside of it. With 24/7, we can make this a reality so that students can stay healthy while on school property and at events. Tobacco use affects everyone, not just those using it. Students, staff and family members can be exposed to second-hand smoke and are also exposed to peer pressure to use tobacco.

I’ve had the chance to collect assessments for the 24/7 Campaign as well as hear amazing stories of why people support these policies. In turn, it makes me want to continue doing my part to make schools safer and students healthier.
