On January 23, Pecos Independent School District became the SECOND district in New Mexico to adopt a 100% comprehensive tobacco-free policy, as recognized by the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) and 24/7.

“We are thrilled that Pecos has prioritized the health of students, staff, and visitors to their school by adopting this 100% tobacco-free policy,” says Benjamin Jacquez, TUPAC Program Manager. “Pecos and Roswell are models to other New Mexico School districts as we partner with them through the 24/7 campaign to implement similar measures.”

This vote comes just weeks after Roswell Independent School District adopted the first tobacco-free district policy in the state.

“Schools are places where kids learn in and outside of the classroom,” says Pecos School Board President Harold Garcia. “Passing a comprehensive tobacco-free policy ensures that students will be protected from tobacco’s influence in the educational environment.”

“The free resources provided will assist in communicating and enforcing the new policy,” says Principal Simon Miera of Pecos High School. “We are working closely with the 24/7 campaign to make sure that everyone knows what the updates mean, and how we can work together to make our school environments 100% tobacco-free.”

“We are proud to offer an even healthier learning environment for our students by becoming the second district in the state to have a truly tobacco-free policy,” says Superintendent Fred Trujillo.

Under a truly comprehensive policy, tobacco use, possession, and distribution is prohibited:

  • by anyone
  • anywhere
  • at anytime
  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
